April!
So, on May 1st I have decided that I am going to tell you all about what I have done for my internship in April. April was failry busy…
Aside from Easter break which eliminated a whole week for my internship in April, I spent most of my time working on a story about my trip to Montgomery, WV. This involved coming up with a rough draft and critiquing it several times. At first, we decided that it should be 250 words because we planned to put it into the Cabrini College Magazine, however, I think it came out to be a little longer. You could view the story here: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/3f349b2d#/3f349b2d/10.
I also worked on a few press releases for Today@ Cabrini, including some announcements regarding achievements in excellence in the field of communication received by some of our students.
All the while I’ve been at my internship I have been applying to different Administrative Assistant positions. So far, I haven’t recieved a phone call or e-mail but I’m still hopeful!
More to come soon. Just an FYI, my final week at my internship is next week ..I’m going to miss it!
March Wrap Up
The last two weeks of March at my internship were spent doing the following things:
- Finishing up the final releases on the Dean’s List and President’s List
- Writing a press release regarding the volunteer opportunity for Cabrini students with the Girl Scouts in Norristown
- Writing a press release for the upcoming Spring Fine Arts Performances
- Writing a press release for the Crabby Creek Earth Day
- Compiling a directory of “Firsts” by the college to be used internally
- Updating a list of “Experts” in the college
April is upon us, which means new work here at my internship. Also, the story I wrote for Project Appalachia will appear in the next issue of the Cabrini Magazine ….yay!
More to come next week…
Friday, March 20
Today I have been working on “February in the News” revisions. Again, this is a record kept of all Cabrini students’/alumni appearances in newspapers, magazines and online articles. I have also been writing a press release for a presentation being delivered by a neuroscience researcher named Dr. Mario Beauregard. He will presenting a summary of his newly published work, “The Spiritual Brain,” on March 31 at 7pm. Though this seems like a very scientific discussion, of which I am not privy, I am still curious to see what it is all about.
I have also been finishing up the press releases for the President’s List.
Monday, March 16
Today I returned to my internship-Yay!
We began with the weekly meeting which was very involved. I was asked about my trip to Appalachia and I explained to my colleagues what I had learned down there.
Next, I was given all of the counties’ newspapers (which I had looked up) who’s e-mails or phone numbers had been disconnected or deleted. I then looked up new phone numbers and called these newspapers in order to get the correct e-mails.
I then worked on “February in the News.” This is a record of all the appearances of the College in newspapers, magazines, and online articles. This also includes students and alumni.
That’s all for now ..more to come on Friday!
March 8-March 13 Spring Break!
On Monday March 9 and Friday March 13 I did not attend my internship due to the college’s Spring Break. I did, however, embark on an immersion trip called “Project Appalachia.” The trip took place in Montgomery, WV, a poor and rural area of the country. The 26 students and 2 faculty members that attended the trip worked hard at building a drop ceiling and building a new floor in the home of 4 Montgomery residents. We stayed in a Presbyterian church and gained a great amount of knowledge about the cycle of poverty in this area.
I return to my internship on Monday the 16th.
Friday, March 6
Today was a very involved day filled with more work on the Dean’s List and President’s List press releases – I think I’m getting close to finishing these! My supervisor said they should go out next week.
Monday, March 2
SNOW DAY!
The College was closed today due to the 11 inches of snow that fell over the Delaware Valley, consequently I could not attend my internship ..sigh.
Feb 23 and Feb 27: More Dean’s List and President’s List
On Monday (Feb. 23) and Friday (Feb 27), I worked on the Dean’s List and the President’s List press releases again. This job is a very involved process which is very time consuming. Also on Monday, we had our weekly meeting which gave me an outlook on what my colleagues in the office are working on.
More to come ..
Friday Feb. 20: Dean’s List and President’s List
So, starting Friday, the 20th, I have embarked on the journey that is the Dean’s List and President’s List. It is certainly a lengthy process, yet, I actually don’t mind it! It’s time consuming and a bit tedious (ok very tedious), but it doesn’t require much thought (which is sometimes a nice change of pace).
What I must catalogue for the nearly 500 or so names is:
- Look up student name, year, major, county and town
- Look up the counties by zip code using the US Census website
- Write the press realeases for each county’s list of students who have earned Dean’s List/President’s List
- Look up county newspapers and contact them with the list of students in their area who have earned Dean’s List/President’s List
This process involves both Microsoft Excell and Microsoft Word. This assignment is projected to last over 2 weeks. I’ll give an update on my progress on Monday!
Monday Feb. 16: Pizza and Press Releases
On Monday, Feb 16th I walked into my internship and was delightfully surprised: upon one of employees’ return from a service trip, pizza was served! So we had the staff meeting in which everyone discussed the project list and then we ate pizza.
Following the pizza I worked on press releases. One was for the worthy nominee that I have mentioned in previous posts. Another was for an ex-death row convict who was wrongfully accused over 15 years ago and was just released from Oklahoma State prison. The man is coming to speak to students at the College and there will be a public event held for him later in the evening. I had to contact a few sources about this event as well as put together internal and external press releases for it. The third press release was for an artist who’s photos will be displayed in an exhibition at the College. I had to find information about him and the reception opening his exhibit. The final release I worked on was for upcoming Fine Arts events at the College.
Monday was fun!
